What a Sports Physical Covers
A sports physical goes beyond the standard annual exam by focusing on your body's ability to handle the specific demands of your activity. Your provider will assess:
- Heart and lung function, including heart rate, blood pressure, and auscultation
- Joint stability, range of motion, and flexibility
- Muscle strength and balance
- History of concussions, fractures, sprains, or surgeries
- Current medications and supplements that may affect performance or safety
If you have a family history of sudden cardiac events, experience palpitations or chest tightness during exercise, or are over 40 and starting a new training program, your provider may recommend an on-site EKG for a cardiac baseline.
On-Site EKG and Lab Work
Avita MD has on-site EKG and phlebotomy at every location. If your provider recommends cardiac screening or blood work to check for anemia, electrolyte imbalances, thyroid function, or inflammatory markers, everything happens during the same visit. No separate lab appointment needed.
Return-to-Activity Evaluations
If you are returning to exercise after an injury, illness, or extended time away, we evaluate your current fitness level and build a plan for getting back safely. This may include a phased activity schedule, recommendations for physical therapy, or follow-up testing to monitor your progress.
Who Needs a Sports Physical
Sports physicals are not just for competitive athletes. Adults commonly need them for:
- Recreational sports leagues (soccer, basketball, tennis, pickleball)
- Marathon and triathlon registration
- Personal training or CrossFit gym requirements
- Returning to exercise after surgery, pregnancy, or prolonged inactivity
- Starting a new fitness program after age 40
- Scuba diving or high-altitude activity clearance

Frequently Asked Questions About Sports Physicals
What does a sports physical include?
A sports physical at Avita MD includes a review of your medical history, a physical exam covering your heart, lungs, joints, flexibility, and blood pressure, and a discussion of any past injuries or ongoing conditions. If your sport or activity level warrants it, we may also recommend an EKG, blood work, or imaging.
Do you offer sports physicals for adults?
Yes. Avita MD provides sports physicals for adults (18 and older). Whether you are joining a recreational league, training for a marathon, returning to exercise after time off, or clearing yourself for a new fitness program, we provide the evaluation you need.
Can I get an EKG during my sports physical?
Yes. Avita MD has on-site EKG testing at all three locations. If you have a family history of heart disease, experience chest tightness during exercise, or simply want a cardiac baseline before starting a new training program, your provider can add an EKG to your visit.
How soon can I get a sports physical?
Avita MD offers same-day and next-day appointments. If you need clearance quickly for a league deadline or event registration, call us at (408) 495-5770 and we will get you in.
Does insurance cover a sports physical?
Coverage depends on your plan. Many PPO plans cover preventive physicals, and your sports physical may fall under that category. If additional testing is ordered, it may be subject to your plan's cost-sharing. Avita MD will let you know about any potential costs before ordering tests.
What should I bring to my sports physical?
Bring your insurance card, a list of current medications, and any forms required by your league, gym, or organization. If you have had previous injuries, bring records or imaging results so your Avita MD provider can review them.
