Understanding and Managing Migraines

A migraine is a neurological condition that causes recurring, often disabling headaches, frequently with throbbing pain on one side of the head along with nausea and sensitivity to light or sound. Migraines are different from ordinary tension headaches, and they respond to different treatments. With the right plan, most people can reduce how often attacks happen and how severe they are.
How migraines differ from ordinary headaches
A tension headache usually causes mild to moderate, steady pressure on both sides of the head. A migraine tends to be more intense, often pulsating, and can be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and a strong sensitivity to light, sound, or smell. Some people experience an “aura” beforehand, such as visual flashes or blind spots. Attacks can last hours to days and often interfere with work and daily life.
Common triggers
Triggers vary from person to person, and identifying yours is a key part of management. Frequently reported triggers include:
- Stress and changes in sleep
- Skipped meals and dehydration
- Certain foods, caffeine, and alcohol
- Hormonal changes
- Bright lights, strong smells, and weather shifts
Keeping a simple headache diary, noting when attacks happen and what preceded them, helps you and your provider spot patterns.
When to see a provider
It is worth seeking care if headaches are frequent, severe, or interfering with your life, if over-the-counter medication is not enough, or if your pattern changes. Seek urgent care for a sudden, severe “worst headache of your life,” a headache with fever and stiff neck, or one with weakness, confusion, or vision loss, since these can signal a more serious problem.
Treatment options
Migraine care generally falls into two categories:
- Acute treatment to stop an attack in progress, which may include specific migraine medications rather than ordinary painkillers.
- Preventive treatment to reduce how often attacks occur, which can include daily medication, lifestyle adjustments, and trigger management for people with frequent migraines.
The right approach depends on how often you get migraines, how severe they are, and your overall health. A provider can match the plan to your situation and adjust it over time.
A personalized plan
At Avita MD, migraine care starts with understanding your specific pattern and triggers, rules out other causes, and builds a treatment plan aimed at both relief and prevention. Because we track your response over time, the plan can be refined until it works for you.
If migraines are affecting your life, you do not have to manage them alone. Same-day and next-day appointments are available at all three Avita MD locations.
